Thackray Museum of Medicine, Leeds is now one of the UK’s largest medical museums and the only one of its kind in the north of England, welcoming over one million visitors. Following an exciting £4million redevelopment, the museum’s 11 galleries chart the history of medical innovation through the often-untold stories of both historic pioneers and everyday health heroes.
Thackray is a venue for discovery and debate, designed for and with a diverse 21st-century audience. In fact, Thackray was shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year award 2021 and received a Special Commendation for the European Museum of the Year Awards 2023, the only UK institution to be shortlisted. As a registered charity, the museum’s continued success relies on the generosity and support of trusts, individuals and corporate sponsors, Friends and Members, fundraising activities, admission fees, and the support of the Thackray Medical Research Trust. It is supported using public funding by Arts Council England and is open daily 10am to 5pm.
Visitors are invited to wander through the grimy streets of Victorian Leeds, watch gruesome operations taking place in our 19th-century operating theatre, visit a seventies-style sexual health clinic, chart how well the world responds to crisis, and discover the medical innovations that changed the world. Through play, creativity, talks, experiences, social events and formal education, this is both a place to pay fitting tribute these pioneers and inspire the next generation of big thinkers.
HR Fire is delighted to have taken care of Thackray’s fire and safety needs for over 10 years. Our engineer Gavin supplies and services all required fire extinguishers throughout the site.
