Fire Door Safety Week

Fire Door Safety Week 2024

HR Fire & Safety is proud to once again support the annual Fire Door Safety Week which took place at the end of September. The aim of the campaign is to increase public understanding of the vital role that fire doors play in protecting property and life in the devastating event of a fire. The campaign is organised by the British Woodworking Federation and is supported by a number of partners, such as the Home Office’s National Fire Safety campaign, the National Fire Chief’s Council and London Fire Brigade.

It is vital that all relevant personnel understand the factors that ensure a fire door performs as intended, including product manufacture, quality, installation and maintenance. Their correct specification, maintenance and management can be the difference between life and death for building occupants. Their use and practice is important – for example, propping a fire door open means that it won’t perform as it should in the event of a fire. Everyone plays their part in ensuring a fire door operates correctly, including the building owner, manager, landlord or occupier.

It is an eye-opening fact that research last year revealed that 57% of the British public could not identify a faulty fire door. Further research from the British Woodworking Federation discovered that of those who could identify a faulty fire door, 49% would not feel it their responsibility to report known issues. This is why the annual Fire Door Safety Week campaign exists.

Aims of Fire Door Safety Week

  • To raise awareness of the critical role that fire doors play in the terrible event of a fire.
  • Ensuring everyone, from the manufactures and installers down to building owners and building users, understand their responsibilities when it comes to fire doors.
  • To encourage building owners and users to check the operation and condition of their fire doors and to report any issues they find that might impact the performance of a fire door.
  • To engage and educate people to understand the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance required for a fire door.

Every year, Fire Door Safety Week raises awareness and helps save lives. It is essential to root out fire doors that are ill-fitted, damaged or poorly maintained and ensure that all buildings are equipped with fire doors that are fit for purpose.

Whilst HR Fire & Safety supplies and maintains a wide range of fire prevention equipment, we do not fit fire doors. However, we are fully qualified to advise on all aspects of fire safety and compliance. We offer comprehensive fire safety training courses for appropriate staff in companies and all types of organisations.

As a fire risk assessment provider, we meet the requirements of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005. Your safety is a priority and our fully trained team will carry out a thorough inspection of your premises and provide you with a detailed written report of recommendations. This Assessment should be carried out every few years so that any potential fire hazards in the workplace may be identified and eradicated.
